GM has set 2010 as target for the release of a production version of the Chevrolet Volt concept electric cars. The concept car has a range of 640 km on one tank of gas. The biggest difference between this car and the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic hybrid is that the gas engine in the Volt does not lead directly to the wheels. Instead, gas engine only powers electric motors. GM main objective is to run the car 40 miles on pure electric power. This means that most drivers can spend an entire day without using a gallon of gas. The car also has the opportunity to touch, so that batteries can be recharged at night. A prototype cars in service is expected by the end of this year.
