2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept

2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept
BMW officials has announced that a new Vision ConnectedDrive Concept Vehicle will be showing up at the Geneva Motor Show and that it will revolutionize driving in terms of comfort, infotainment and safety. The two-door roadsters "layered" appearance evokes the EfficientDynamics concept from 2009, while its asymmetrical layout brings back memories of 2001s X Coupe concept. Just as the former previewed a wild, forthcoming production car and the latter ushered in the Bangle design era, the 2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept provides a glimpse of BMWs to come.
2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept
BMW is only offering up a few details on this concept, but judging by its name, we expect a vehicle that will include the latest car-to-car communication features. It is an efficient and technologically advanced roadster, not sacrificing anything in terms of driving pleasure. It is unclear whether the model is related in some way with rumors of a future BMW roadster, smaller than Z4, or is a natural development of the GINA concept, but the new model is said to predict the future appearance of the BMW series vehicles.
Official BMW representatives said: In 2011 the automobile industry is celebrating the anniversary 125 yeas of the automobile, reason enough to not only look back, but also to look forward. Connectivity is one of the key fields of tomorrows world. And of course, we at BMW are proud to be among the pioneers of connected driving: for example, with the first on-board internet access in 2008, the first iPod integration in 2004, or the first ultrasound-based park distance control PDC in 1991.
2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept
2011 is also the year in which we are setting course for the future. Initial insights are already available to you now in the Future Lab from BMW Vision ConnectedDrive. Or soon right here, with an extraordinary vehicle concept, which will once again revolutionize driving in terms of comfort, infotainment and safety. Exactly as you have come to expect from BMW.
Some rumors suggest that the model will have a 3D interface that will relate to the driver, with a futuristic design. The second feature is visible and will go in the direction of future BMW models. Instead, it is unclear how much influence the future creation of the BMW model, since the differences between the current range and the concept presented in Geneva 2011 are quite large, which hampers a rapid transition.
2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept
The layered surfaces are enhanced with fiber-optic lighting effects that highlight the different functions and sections of the 2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept car. It certainly isn't possible to design a car like this with just a few pen strokes. And it is a remarkable and potentially trend-setting approach that is every bit as daring as the one taken by BMW design ten years ago with the X Coupe.
The windshield acts as the medium for a three-dimensional head-up display, and additional information is shown on the monitor behind the steering wheel. Tellingly, the layer that displays relevant driving information is christened the "safety layer," and it is fed by plenty of watchful sensors. A larger zone that also encompasses the passengers is called the "infotainment layer," and it offers movies, music, and internet access. Passengers also get their own display with nav and music info, which can then be sent to the drivers attention at the press of a finger.
The 2011 New BMW Sports Cars Vision ConnectedDrive Concept design and technology of this spectacular roadster are aimed at making the vehicle an integral part of a networked world. Comfort, safety and the infotainment experience in the vehicle can be precisely optimized by the innovative functionality, individually tailored to suit the requirements of both the driver and passenger. New technologies and design concepts are employed to add even more facets to the unmistakable BMW driving pleasure.

The turbocharger system developed for the engine of the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is maintains a high output throughout the entire engine speed range. Nominal peak torque is increased to 332 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Maximum output of 335 hp is delivered at 5,900 rpm. The enhanced engine management system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes an electronically-controlled overboost function to briefly increase torque under full load by another 37 lb-ft. This temporary torque peak of 369 lb-ft gives the car a significant increase in acceleration. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is will complete the sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds (preliminary). Top speed of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is offers outstanding power and performance without an increase in fuel consumption or emissions. Its figures are expected to match those of the BMW Z4 sDrive35i with Double-Clutch Transmission on the EPA test cycle. This balance of performance and fuel efficiency results from the fundamental design and layout of the BMW inline-6, which combines twin turbochargers with High Precision direct injection. The fuel injectors operate at a pressure of up to 200 bar (2900 psi), distributing fuel in a conical spray pattern throughout the combustion chamber. Another advantage of direct fuel injection is its cooling effect which allows higher compression while reducing the possibility of detonation. Further technologies offered under the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy include Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, and on-demand operation of engine accessory units.

2011 ALPINA B7 BMW Pictures

Both short- and long-wheelbase models will be offered. The BMW ALPINA B7 will make its North American premiere at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show in February, and go on sale at authorized BMW Centers in Spring of 2010. Bmw announced today the prices for the 2011 Alpina B7 for US - $122,875 (standard wheelbase) and $126,775 (extended wheelbase). BMW of North America announced that the BMW ALPINA B7 sedan will join BMWs North American product range as the most dynamic 7 Series model. The BMW ALPINA B7 represents the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, technology, luxury and exclusivity. However, Alpina B7 is slightly less powerful that the 760i, but it looks very very sporty and aggressive.

2011 ALPINA B7 BMW

Yielding exquisite levels of power and torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8, and in conjunction with the electronically-adjustable suspension with active roll stabilization, the new B7 promises to offer a spectrum of driving experiences so broad as to be unheard of in this class of automobiles. The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21 ALPINA CLASSIC wheels underline the fresh design language found throughout the B7 and impart it a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.ALPINA a name famous in Europe and the wider world for putting a particular performance accent on BMWs, though not yet so well-known in North America. BMW a name famous all over the world for motor vehicles of performance, quality, luxury and safety. The two companies, both at home in the German state of Bavaria, have a long history of working together to produce special BMW automobiles. Burkard Bovensiepen, son of the founder of ALPINA Business Machines and an enthusastic racing driver/engineer, began his automotive career path in 1961 by developing a dual-carburetor setup for the just-introduced BMW 1500 sedan. It was a predictive beginning: to take an already fine-performing BMW (which also just happened to be a practical sedan) and making it perform even better.

2011 ALPINA B7 BMW

By 1964, BMW had officially recognized ALPINAs contribution to BMW performance. Not long thereafter, Burkard Bovensiepen founded the ALPINA company ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen KG that continues today, creating special versions of BMW automobiles that offer a particular brand of performance for discriminating auto enthusiasts. Yet outside the circle of dedicated BMW enthusiasts, ALPINA has kept a low profile in North America. In addition to racing versions of BMWs, ALPINA has developed a progression of BMW-based cars based on 3, 5, 6, 8, Z4 and Z8 models and offered them on a limited-production basis. ALPINA is located in the small Bavarian city of Buchloe, some 50 miles southwest of Munich, BMWs headquarters city and the capital of Bavaria.

2011 ALPINA B7 BMW

The B7 is the newest manifestation of the unique BMW-ALPINA synergy once again based on the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan. Currently, BMW offers ultra-performance models of its 3, 5, 6, X5 and X6 Series developed by BMW M, BMWs own performance subsidiary. For an ultra-performance version of the 7 Series a vehicle defined by luxury and generous interior space something other than M performance character was called for. In recent models, ALPINA has concentrated on delivering very high levels of performance with moderate rpm ranges and automatic transmission. Most appropriately, the new BMW ALPINA B7 applies this philosophy to the newest 7 Series to produce a luxury sedan of stunning performance. A 7 Series Beyond, one might say.

2010 X5 6-cylinde BMWs sophisticated 3.0-liter

The 2010 X5 continues with a choice of three powertrains two gasoline and one diesel. The gasoline-power choices include an inline 6-cylinder (X5 xDrive30i) or a V-8 (X5 xDrive 48i) engines: both providing performance and excellent efficiency. The flagship 48i boasts BMWs all-aluminum Valvetronic V-8, with 350 horsepower. The 30i features BMWs aluminum/magnesium inline-6 rated at 260-horsepower. Introduced last year, the X5 xDrive35d features BMWs sophisticated 3.0-liter sequential twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder diesel. This 50-state compliant engine produces 265 horsepower and a stunning 425 lb-ft of torque. Standard equipment on all three models is a 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic. BMWs outstanding xDrive all-wheel-drive system continues, enhanced via a closer link between the xDrive electronics and the X5s Dynamic Stability Control to provide even quicker, more accurate response.
Photo: 2010 BMW X5 SAV
The X5s front suspension represents a break from a 45-year-old BMW tradition: Its a double wishbone multi-link design with upper A-arms combined with double-pivot lower linksthe first non-strut design since 1961. The companys departure from its traditional dual-pivot strut front suspension was dictated by customers increasing expectations for ride and handling. Combined with a longer wheelbase, wider track and BMWs revised 4-link Integral rear suspension, the new front design sets new standards for on-road ride and handling, as well as improved all-road ability. In keeping with its original mission, the X5s focus still places more emphasis on pavement performance, keeping it well abreast of the competition.
The new X5 xDrive35d: power, torque and remarkable fuel efficiency. All with refinement and performance worthy of a BMW.
In Europe, where fuel prices have historically been and remain much higher than in the U.S., vehicle manufacturers have achieved dramatic gains in the performance, smoothness, quietness and emission control of diesel engineswhile maintaining the diesels historic superiority in fuel efficiency. Last year the BMW X5 xDrive35d brought this progress to the U.S., with brand-new technology that meets the emission standards of all 50 U.S. states.
Like all BMW gasoline engines, the X5s diesel is constructed with a weight-saving aluminum cylinder block something thats not taken for granted given the diesels much higher compression pressures. (All BMW engines have aluminum cylinder heads.) It is an inline 6-cylinder engine maintaining a defining BMW tradition that means exceptional smoothness and unique sound.
In addition, several diesel-specific technologies of this new engine contribute to its achievement of true high performance, diesel fuel economy and clean exhaust:
Common-rail direct fuel injection. One of the most important innovations of recent diesel development, this has replaced the individual-cylinder or distributor-type injection systems of earlier diesel engines.
Common Rail (CR) means that a single, very high-pressure fuel-delivery pump supplies all cylinders, the fuel traveling along a common rail or distributor line. From there, fuel is injected at extremely high pressure (180 bar/2645 lb./sq in.) directly into the cylinder.
The basic novelty of common-rail injection was to divorce the production of fuel pressure from the actual injection process; this was necessary to give the diesel engine what gasoline engines have long had, namely completely electronically controlled fuel injection. CR also facilitates multiple injections per combustion cycle. In all, this was a breakthrough that made possible dramatic strides in diesel power, efficiency and emission control.
Piezo injectors. A further breakthrough, already applied by BMW in other models twin-turbo gasoline engines. With direct injection, the injectors that critical component injecting fuel into each cylinders combustion chamber are subject to especially high temperatures and pressures. Instead of most injectors conventional electrical valves, a stack of piezo crystals reacts lighting-fast to impulses from the engine electronics governing the injector needles opening stroke and duration for ultra-precise control. This, too, facilitates major advances in fuel economy and emission control, in gasoline, as well as diesel engines.
Photo: 2010 BMW X5 SAV
Sequential Twin Turbo technology. In contrast to the two small, equal-size turbochargers of BMWs twin-turbo gasoline engines, the diesel employs two turbos of different sizes.
At low engine speeds, intake air does pass through the large turbo, but its the smaller, lower-inertia one that does the air compressing (turbocharging). Thanks to its optimum efficiency within this rpm range, it provides effective boost for driving from a standstill up to modest acceleration rates and driving speeds. So it is that this engine develops a good 390 lb-ft. of torque at as low as 1500 rpm a remarkable achievement that will amaze first-time X5 xDrive35d drivers and continue to thrill those who drive this BMW regularly.
With increasing engine speed, the larger turbocharger begins to take over: first as a pre-compressor for the smaller one, then progressively until it becomes the primary turbo. The engine reaches its maximum of 425 lb-ft. by 1750 rpm, then maintains this immense torque level until 2250 rpm going on to reach its peak power of 265 hp at 4200 rpm.
Diesel combustion, power and torque characteristics. In its most basic distinction from gasoline engines, a diesel engine achieves its combustion not with a sparkplug, but by much harder compression of the fuel-air mixture; the X5 xDrive35d engine, for example, has a compression ratio of 16.5:1, vs. 10.7:1 and 10.5:1 in the gasoline engines of the X5 xDrive30i and 48i, respectively.
The diesel combustion process also produces very different torque and power characteristics. For example, the 48is V-8 engine reaches a maximum torque of 350 lb-ft. @ 3400 rpm and a maximum power of 350 hp @ 6300 rpm, while the six cylinder engine of the 35d attains its maximum torque of 425 lb-ft. @ 1750-2250 rpm and its maximum power of 265 hp @ just 4200 rpm. In general, diesels have this low-speed-torque, lower-rpm character and in their vehicular application, they are geared differently. As such, an automatic is the ideal partner for a diesel engine.
Diesel engines also employ a different fuel, the product of a different refining process from that of gasoline. The two fuels are not interchangeable; gasoline cannot be used in a diesel engine and vice versa. Their prices typically diverge; at any time or in any location, demand may be different for the two, and government taxation policies for gasoline and diesel fuel also diverge.
Stellar pulling moxie, full-bore acceleration and fuel efficiency. The huge torque output of 425 lb-ft. at relatively low engine speeds speaks for itself; X5 xDrive35d drivers will marvel at this engines robust response at low to medium speeds. The peak power output of 265 hp also speaks for itself, as does the resulting 0-60-mph time of 6.9 seconds. That is only a half-second slower than the V8 X5 xDrive48i. In spite of its responsiveness, it returns EPA mileage estimates of 19 mpg city and 26 highway.
Most advanced exhaust gas management: SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection.
BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance optimizes emission management by incorporating an oxidation catalyst placed close to the engine, a diesel particulate filter housed in the same unit, and an SCR catalyst with urea injection. Apart from filtering out even the smallest particles from the flow of exhaust gases, this combination ensures effective reduction of nitric oxides (NOX) by way of a chemical reaction within the exhaust system initiated by the injection of a small dose of urea referred to as Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Into the exhaust stream. The ammonia (NH3) generated in this process within the SCR catalyst subsequently converts the nitric oxides (NO and, respectively, NO2) in the exhaust gas into environmentally compatible nitrogen (N2) and water vapor (H2O).
BMW has developed a two-tank system for DEF ensuring convenient use of this new technology with all the benefits and ease required by the customer: The amount of DEF required in each case is drawn from the active tank comprising approximately 1.6 gallons by means of a dosage pump. And since the urea solution would freeze at a temperature of -11oC, this active tank, as well as the dosage pipes are heated.
BluePerformance technology by BMW: reduced emissions without additional service appointments.
The active tank is connected to a second reservoir, the so-called passive tank. With its additional capacity of approximately 4.5 gallons, this passive tank offers a plentiful supply of the urea solution required within the SAV. The average range provided on this supply capacity is indeed sufficient to have the tank system replenished as part of normal scheduled maintenance.
