The ultimate goal for Ferrari F430 Spider Bio Fuel Concept is to cut emissions by forty percent by 2012. The company stresses that they will make this happen without compromising performance. On the F430 Spider, the fuel system and the engine control unit are modified to handle the ethanol fuel. With these changes, the Ferrari gains 10 hp along with a four percent boost in torque. On top of that, CO2 emissions fall by five percent when ethanol fuel is used. We see this as the first step - a baby step - for the company and we expect more changes in the future including the use of lighter weight components, direct injection, and possibly smaller displacement engines supplemented by turbochargers.

Pernahkah Anda mengamati logo sebuah produsen mobil? Setidaknya peminat otomotif tahu bahwa Mercedes identik dengan emblem bintang tiganya, Mitsubishi dengan lambang tiga berlian, serta Ferrari yang mendunia dengan logo kuda jingkrak.

Setiap logo tentu mempunyai filosofi tersendiri. Bisa juga menyimpan sejarah perjalanan produsen mobil tersebut. Anda perlu mengetahui filosofi dan cerita panjang perkembangan beberapa produsen mobil dunia yang terangkum dalam logo mereka.

Ragam Filosofi Logo
Hewan sejak jaman dulu akrab dengan kehidupan manusia. Tak heran jika hewan dipakai sebagai sumber inspirasi. Di dunia permobilan, 2 produsen supercar dari Italia dan 1 dari Jerman yang memakai hewan sebagai unsur utama logo mereka, yakni Lamborghini, Ferrari, dan Porsche. Peugeot, Jaguar, serta Ford pun nyatanya juga mengikuti gejala ini.

Lamborghini yang terkenal dengan varian Diablo (si setan) ini memilih banteng sebagai logo. Alasannya ternyata sederhana, logo diambil dari simbol Taurus, bintang kelahiran pendirinya, Ferucio Lamborghini. Ia mendirikan Lamborghini SA pada 1963, dan kini berkembang menjadi salah satu raksasa supercar Italiano, bahkan dunia.

Lain halnya dengan Enzo Ferrari, pendiri perusahaan otomotif Ferrari. la memulai karirnya sebagai pembalap mobil. Pada suatu balapan di Sirkit Sivocci, Ravenna (1923), Enzo didekati oleh Count Enrico dan Countess Paolina Baracca, orang tua Francesco Baracca, seorang pahlawan Italia dalam pertempuran udara. Fransesco sang patriot ini gugur dalam tugasnya sebagai pilot tempur Italia dalam Perang Mount Montello. Di Sirkit Sivocci itu, Count Enrico menghadiahi Enzo emblem skuadron tempur Francesco yang berupa siluet seekor kuda jingkrak hitam di atas perisai kuning. Logo The Prancing Horse ini awalnya dipakai oleh tim balap Scuderia Ferrari (1929), dan akhirnya oleh perusahaan automobil Auto?Avio Construzioni Ferrari (1940) di Modena. Secara kebetulan kuning merupakan warna khas kota Modena, kota kelahiran dan lokasi awal pabrik Ferrari. Bendera Italia di bagian atas merupakan tambahan yang tentu saja menegaskan negeri asal Ferrari. Akibat Perang Dunia II, pabriknya dipindahkan ke Maranello hingga saat ini.

Di Jerman, fenomena ini pun ada. Logo Porsche menunjukkan keterkaitan lokasi perusahaan terhadap negara bagian Baden?Wurttenberg, khususnya pada kota Stuttgart. Kuda di tengah adalah simbol kota Stuttgart; sekaligus merefleksikan keindahan dan kekuatan produk Porsche. Siapa yang meragukan mutu disain serta kecepatan mobil Porsche? Sementara itu, bentuk serta ornamen di tameng yang melatarbelakangi gambar kuda adalah emblem khas Wurttenberg. Bangsa Yunani kuno amat memuja, menghormati, bahkan mengaitkan kuda dengan sifat kedewaan. Kuda merupakan paduan keindahan dan kekuatan. Uniknya, saat Ferdinand Porsche membuka divisi disain pada Maret 1931, ia memulai proyeknya dengan angka 7 karena tak ingin konsumen merasa, bahwa itu adalah produk perdananya.

Sementara pabrik mobil terbesar kedua Prancis, kiprah Peugeot bermula dari sebuah kincir angin Peugeot di kota kecil Herimoncourt, daerah Sous?Cratet di distrik Doubs, Prancis Timur. Pada 1812, Jean?Frederic dan Jean?Pierre Peugeot mendapat izin dari pemerintah Doubs untuk mengubah kincir tersebut menjadi pabrik bernama Peugeot Brothers pembuat baja rol untuk gergaji dan per jam dinding, serta silinder?silinder baja. Pada 1918 mereka mendaftarkan paten pertama dalam hal pembuatan gergaji. Menginjak tahun 1840, bisnis mereka berkembang menjadi industri peralatan rumah tangga seperti setrika, pemotong makanan, mesin jahit, mesin cuci, bahkan korset dari tulang ikan paus! Dunia transportasi baru benar?benar dirambah ketika Armand Peugeot memproduksi sepeda pada 1885, otomotif pada 1889 lewat mobil uap dan akhirnya pada 1890 dengan mobil bensin Peugeot pertama dengan mesin Daimler. Logo singa berdiri Peugeot merefleksikan filosofi Peugeot sebagai mobil yang memiliki the strength of lion and grace of feline (kekuatan singa dan keanggunan kucing Siam).

Jaguar sedikit banyak memiliki kesamaan filosofi Peugeot. Sama?sama terinspirasi oleh kucing besar. Nama Jaguar adalah pilihan ideal untuk merepresentasikan keanggunan yang elegan, gambaran tentang sebuah mesin tangguh dan tangkas dalam bermanuver. Memang filosofi inilah yang diperjuangkan oleh pendirinya, Bill Lyons, yang pada September 1922 di kota Blackpool mendirikan Swallow Sidecar Company hasil pinjaman �1.000 dari bank. Seiring naiknya penjualan, pada akhir '20?an pabrik dipindahkan ke Midlands Coventry, pusat industri otomotif Inggris.

Menginjak 1935, mulai dirasakan kebutuhan untuk memberi nama baru pada produk Swallow. Adalah perusahaan agen periklanan Swallow yang mengusulkan nama Jaguar. Brand ini ternyata mendapat sambutan hangat sehingga dipertahankan sampai sekarang. Mulai era '90?an Ford menyuntikkan modal sekitar USD2,7miliar ke Jaguar untuk menaikkan produksi dan penjualan Jaguar dengan jaminan pemasaran Ford yang menggurita. Produk Jaguar yang semula murni buatan tangan?tangan terampil pun mulai beralih ke semi otomatis, bahkan robot.

Selain gambar hewan utuh, bagian tubuh hewan pun dijadikan logo oleh beberapa pabrikan. Sayap burung misalnya, Ford mengaplikasikan bentuk sayap pada salah satu divisinya, Mercury. Sayap itu melambangkan Dewa Merkurius, sang pembawa pesan Mahadewa Jupiter dalam mitologi Romawi. Logo ini menyiratkan keandalan, ketangguhan, dan kecepatan yang dimiliki oleh mobil?mobil Mercury. Nama Mercury sendiri merupakan pilihan Edsel Ford, anak Henry Ford, dari 104daftar nama termasuk Ford Falcon, Pharaoh, dan Cyclops

Sejarah Mercedes

Mercedes adalah nama seorang gadis cantik anak dari seorang diplomat Austro-Hungaria, yang tinggal di Perancis, Emille Jellinek. Nama �mercedes� sendiri dalam bahasa Spanyol berarti belas kasih. Meskipun mobil-mobil yang menyandang nama tersebut tidak pernah memperlihatkan belas kasih kepada lawan-lawannya.

Nama yang lembut ini sejak awal abad ke 20 telah menghiasi kap mesin mobil-mobil yang performa dan pengendaliannya merajai sirkuit-sirkuit balapan di dunia. Dari Indianapolis ke Lemans, dari Irlandia turun ke Inggris sampai Italia dan Afrika, dengan rumah di Jerman, nama Mercedes telah meninggalkan memori akan kesempurnaan sebuah perusahaan yang menciptakan benda-benda yang sekarang kita sebut automobil.

Emille Jellinek adalah seorang konsul untuk kerajaan Astro-Hungaria yang bertugas di Nice, Perancis. Ia adalah orang yang cukup kaya, direktur sebuah bank dan agen tidak resmi Daimler-Benz di Perancis. Akan tetapi Pak Jelinnek yang tenang dan serius ini memiliki sisi liar yang tersembunyi. Dia senang ngebut dan balap! Untuk menjaga citranya di dunia bisnis, ia menggunakan nama anaknya sebagai samaran setiap kali turun balapan.

Pada Tahun 1898, Gottfried Daimler dan chief engineer-nya Wilhelm Maybach membangun sebuah mobil balap bernama Canstatt-Daimler. Mobil ini sangat kencang sekaligus berbahaya. Walaupun hanya sedikit yang diproduksi, kendaraan ini telah membunuh sejumlah pengemudinya. Emille Jellinek memiliki salah satu mobil ini, dan ia menyampaikan kekecewaannya kepada Daimler dengan mendorongnya untuk membuat mobil yang bukan hanya kencang di trek balap tapi juga aman untuk dikendarai. Saran ini disambut dengan hangat oleh Daimler. Diam-diam mereka mengubur desain Canstatt-Daimler dan Wilhelm Maybach menciptakan desain yang sama sekali baru. Mobil baru ini dikembangkan dari desain eksperimental yang dibuat oleh anak laki-laki Daimler, Paul, beberapa waktu sebelumnya. Kendaraan ini selesai dibuat pada tahun 1900 dan merupakan kendaraan pertama yang tampak seperti mobil modern yang kita kenal saat ini. Jelinek mengawasi proses pembuatan kendaraan ini dan memberi masukan-masukan disepanjang jalan. Ketika Kendaraan tersebut akan diproduksi, Jellinek memberikan sebuah saran, kendaraan baru ini harus membawa nama anaknya. Daimler dan Maybach setuju, hari itu lahirlah dinasti mobil-mobil luar biasa yang menyandang nama seorang wanita, Mercedes. Mercedes yang pertama adalah mobil tertua dalam sejarah otomotif. Turunan langsung dari mobil pertama yang dapat digunakan secara praktis sehari-hari, yaitu Daimler, pada tahun 1886.

Ketika Gottfried Daimler meninggal pada tahun 1900 banyak pengamat yang memrediksi bahwa perusahaan ini akan runtuh tanpa pimpinan Daimler yang genius. Akan tetapi para pengamat ini melupakan 3 hal penting, yaitu : keberadaan Wilhelm Maybach sebagai Chief Engineer, Paul Daimler yang memiliki naluri mencipta yang tidak kalah hebat dari ayahnya dan Emille Jellinek, saat itu menjabat Direktur perusahaan yang bukan saja memiliki insting bisnis yang tajam tapi juga dukungan finansial kelas satu. Mobil Mercedes yang mulai diproduksi pada tahun 1900 ternyata sukses besar di pasaran. Daimler Motoren Gesellshcaft menjadi lebih kuat dari sebelumnya. Logo tiga bintang yang legendaris diresmikan sebagai logo perusahaan tahun 1909 dan sejak saat itu kemilau sang bintang menyilaukan mata para pengemudi yang hanya bisa termenung ketika menemukan mobilnya disusul oleh mobil-mobil buatan pabrik yang berbasis di Stuttgart ini.

Gambaran paling mengagumkan di ajang otomotif tahun ini muncul melalui hadirnya mobil Vision CLS Coupe 4 pintu. Ini hasil studi terbaru yang dipresentasikan Mercedes-Benz di Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) belum lama ini.
�Sejumlah besar pengemudi yang disurvai oleh kami ternyata begitu antusias terhadap mobil coupe 4-pintu. Kami begitu ngototnya dalam ide untuk konsep kendaraan inovatif ini, dan mendahulukan Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class yang terbaru ini menuju tahapan produksi,� ujar Professor J�rgen Hubbert, anggota dewan direksi DaimlerChrysler AG dan pimpinan Mercedes Car Group di Stuttgart.
Kendaraan 4 pintu ini jelas memberi penawaran terbaik yang memiliki nilai tambah berlebih dibandingkan mobil sejenis lain. Pada tahun ini, pabrikan yang berbasis di Stuttgart mencurahkan segenap konsep dan inspirasi kendaraan terbaru, yang sebagian besar akan memasuki tahapan produksi sebagai seri mobil terbaru. Contoh kesuksesan ini termasuk antara lain A-Class, M-Class, SLK Roadster, SLR-McLaren, dan Grand Sports Tourer masa depan.
Vision CLS diklaim pabriknya mampu mengeluarkan tenaga sampai 195 kW atau 265 hp. Sebagai sedan elok yang berbahan bakar solar, mengendarainya pasti memberikan pengalaman hebat. Akselerasinya tak kalah dengan mobil sport. Menurut catatan, dari 0 sampai dengan 100 km/jam, Vision CLS membukukan waktu hanya 6,4 detik.
Sudah tentu ini karena mobil ini mengusung mesin ultra modern, 6 silinder biturbo yang mampu memacunya secepat kilat. Vision CLS dapat digeber lebih dari 250km/jam, tapi sayangnya kecepatan dibatasi secara elektronik. Lalu bagaimana pemakaian bahan bakarnya. Menurut data dari pihak Mercedes-Bens, lumayan hemat sebab untuk untuk jarak 100 km hanya menghabiskan 7,5 liter.
Mercedes-Benz menerapkan berbagai inovasi dalam kendaraan terbaru ini. Tenaga disalurkan melalui transmisi 7G-Tronic 7 speed auto sehingga torsi sebesar 560 Nm dapat mengalir sempurna. Juga standar keamanan untuk kendaraan mewah, di antaranya airbags depan, windowbags dan sidebags serta sabuk pengaman tensioner dan belt force limiters. Lampu depan aktif, lampu sein dan sistem pengereman elektronik dengan sensotronik (Senso-tronic Brake Control, SBC).
Vision CLK dilengkapi ban berukuran 255/35R-19 depan dan belakang 285/30 R-19 yang membuatnya mampu melaju mantap di aspal. Soal kenyamanan yang prima berkat dukungan suspensi depan dan belakang yang memakai Airmatic DC.

SLR Mc Laren
Satu lagi teknologi puncak dunia sport otomotif berhasil diukir Mercedes-Benz AG Jerman yang pada musim gugur lalu meluncurkan Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren yang mengusung teknologi Formula1.
SLR, julukan populer untuk kelas ini adalah mobil sport dengan reputasi terbaik yang dimiliki Mercedes sejak pertama diluncurkan tahun 1955. Kini 48 tahun kemudian, SLR generasi terbaru diproduksi Mercedez-Benz AG dengan kecanggihan teknologi McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 �Silver Arrows� tanpa melupakan desain orisinal SLR.
Model terbaru SLR ini menjembatani masa lalu dan masa depan. Teknologi balap mobil di sirkuit dunia kini diwujudkan ke jalan raya, dengan inspirasi yang sama saat SLR Coupi diluncurkan 1955. Mobil sport terbaru ini semakin mengangkat nama Mercedes-Benz dan mitranya McLaren sebagai dua perusahaan dengan reputasi tinggi di dunia teknologi industri mobil sport yang sukses di arena Formula-1.
Desain mobil sport Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren hebatnya mencakup semua aspek kenyamanan, kecepatan, dan keamanan penumpang yang dilakukan secermat mungkin. Walhasil menghasilan kendaraan yang mempesona dari segi penampilan dan performa.
Selain mengusung mesin canggih, material sasis dam rem memakai bahan carbon-fibre dan ceramic dengan high-tech. Salah satu contoh transfer teknologi Formula-1 ke mobil sport adalah dipakainya fiber karbon untuk konstruksi sasis dan rangka yang butuh teknologi yang amat rumit (sophisticated).
Tingkat kekuatan dan kekokohan sasis mobil jalan raya yang belum pernah bisa dicapai kini dapat diaplikasikan dengan adopsi teknologi F-1. Struktur sasis serat karbon yang baru pada kendaraan ini ternyata mampu memberi standar baru pembuatan mobil sport dari aspek ketahanan terhadap benturan dan penyerapan energi.
Sistem remnya yang baru juga dibuat dari bahan inovasi terbaru dari bahan composite material yaitu Fibre-reinforced ceramics yang tahan panas yang ekstrem serta tahan lama. Mesin yang memakai V8 yang dikembangkan Mercedes-AMG dilengkapi teknologi supercharger yang mampu memberi torsi dan tenaga yang hebat. Setiap mesin di mobil SLR ini dibuat dengan tangan (manual) untuk mencapai akurasi maksimal.
